TweetaMeal.com: My tuppence worth

Thank you to @JayneHilditch for getting the ball rolling with our #cookalong (I like that hashtag by the way)

With my mashed potato/swede combo yesterday receiving such negative feedback from long-suffering Darren, I am hoping that our joint twittercast with @jobsworth@hubmum & @williamheath will inspire me to prepare a few edible offerings.

I’ve decided that the key issue for me is timing. There’s many occasion I wander into the kitchen, put the kettle on for a cuppa and then wander back to my desk and get distracted by work. It’s fine when all that’s at stake is just a kettle of water that switches itself off, but more often than not the consequences are slightly more dire…

Jayne, I agree with all your format/comments on how we should do this - they sound great. I also wonder whether we should have some kind of Come Dine With Me scoring criteria based on appearance, taste etc., incorporating diners’ responses (although I don’t imagine I will pose too much of a threat to anyone).

So now to decide when to kick off this culinary experiment…..

And we’re on the starting blocks

The origins…  A bunch of largely tech-tweeters that are also kinda interested in food.

@jobsworth reguarly tweets his meal preparations.   @hubmum tweets evidence of hercooking related injuries (gore alert).  One Sunday afternoon they land on the idea of a synchronised twittercast of meal preparation.

@williamheath reckons this sounds fun, and puts his saucepan on the hob too.

I’m @JayneHilditch and I love to cook, and have been known tweet the odd picture or three of my supper.  And I follow three of the above cast of characters and smiled as this little idea came together.  So I figured I’d join in too.  I pinged a tweet to @Kate_Halls as I figured she might also like to get onboard…  Her enthusiasm for cooking is unquestionable, albeit the verdict on the results is more equivocal

I’ve offered to organise… so this is it.

An outline plan folks - feel free to chip in…

Let’s agree a format - are we all thinking the same thing?  We settle on a date/time, agree a hashtag, and do a sort of “twitter-commentary” as we progress through our afternoon of culinary endeavours.  Pictures of ingredients and equipment laid out ready, progress shots, and finished article.  And injuries should any arise.

We could post our diners’ responses to the meals we produce.

This tumblr to document more fully the recipes/instructions.

Thoughts/Questions?

Should we be ambitious and each try to tweet a full 3 course dinner?  Or should we take a dish each in order to create a single meal?

Could this be more than some simple fun on a Saturday afternoon?  I’ve oft been inspired to try new things by hearing about others ideas.  Could we inspire a bunch of non-cookers to try to create something new?  Could sharing what goes well *and* not so well, help others to experiment?

I’m guessing we might all share an underlying theme of interest in “real food” and wanting others to enjoy that too… Could this become something bigger?

Let’s see what we learn from the initial experiment :)

So, first things first.  As an outline, does that sound like something we’re all up for? How do we make it a better idea?

I figured this URL would come in handy for our little experiment.  I’ll set up the cooking-tweeters with permissions for this tumblr, and I’m about to set up comments in it (assuming I can figure out disqus).  If anyone has the time/talent to faff about with tumblr themes, I’d be delighted if could look better than it currently does!
